ultrasound
During pregnancy, you can visit our experienced sonographers for all types of medical ultrasounds. And if you want to admire your little one even more, you are welcome to come in for a fun ultrasound (both 2D and 3D/4D).
A first meeting with your baby
You will hear the results immediately after all ultrasounds. We will give you the images on paper and also offer the option of receiving them digitally for a small fee. This allows you to easily review them again.
Information you must have read before we perform the ultrasound scan
A screening ultrasound, such as the 13-week and 20-week ultrasounds, is a medical examination. Therefore, it is best to bring as few people as possible with you, and especially no small children.
We handle your data with care, including the images taken during ultrasound examinations. In doing so, we comply with the obligations under European privacy law, the GDPR and other legislation, such as the WGBO.
Protecting your privacy
a. Provision of data for good care
With your consent to perform the ultrasound examination, we may assume that you agree to your data being provided to other healthcare providers to the extent necessary for the provision of good care. This involves making data available in Peridos to those requesting the ultrasound scan and other healthcare providers involved, such as (e.g. after referral) doctors at the (academic) hospital, as well as other exchanges of information with the requesting party.
b. Sharing your data for quality purposes
We wish to explicitly inform you about the possible anonymous use of ultrasound images and any other data from your file for quality purposes.
To ensure that the quality of our care is monitored and, where possible, improved, we share your data with others.
First, we enter the data from the screening examinations you have participated in into the national Peridos data system. After the screening ultrasound has been performed, this data can be viewed by the Regional Centres. Their task is to monitor the quality of the screening. If you object to this access to your personal data, you can report this to your healthcare provider (midwife or ultrasound technician), who will ensure that your personal data is removed from Peridos. This means that the screening data can no longer be traced back to you as a person.
In addition, we are required to regularly send ultrasound images to Regional Centres as part of quality audits. If you object to this, we will not do so with the images from your screening examination. If you ask your healthcare provider (midwife or ultrasound technician) to remove your personal data from Peridos after the screening, this data will no longer be traceable to you as a person and therefore also not to the Regional Centre, and your ultrasound images will no longer be available for retrieval from the ultrasound centre.
If you only object to screening images being sent to the Regional Centre in your Peridos data, you can notify us and we will not use these images.
In addition, we also use the images from the (screening) examinations and any other data from your file to discuss case studies with midwives, doctors, PND ultrasound technicians and academic hospitals. The purpose of these discussions is to view each other's images and learn from each other in order to improve quality. We ensure as far as possible that your data cannot be directly traced back to you as an individual. If you indicate that you object to this data sharing, we will not use your data for this quality assessment.
Prohibition on filming and taking photographs of the investigation
It is not permitted to film or photograph the examination without our permission. We refer you to the KNMG guideline ‘Recording of conversations by patients’. If it transpires that you have made visual recordings, we reserve the right to take appropriate measures, including reporting the matter to the police. Making visual recordings without the consent of those involved is a criminal offence, even if the recording is for private use only.
Medical ultrasounds
If you are pregnant, you will be offered a number of ultrasounds on medical grounds. These include the term ultrasound, the 13-week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound. In addition to these ultrasounds, there are other medical ultrasounds that may be recommended by your midwife/ultrasound technician. These may include ultrasounds to check the growth or position of the baby.
Would you like an additional ultrasound scan without medical indication? That is possible!
Please take a look at our fun ultrasounds.
The vitality scan is an early scan performed around 7 to 8 weeks.
(At least 2 weeks after a positive pregnancy test).
This ultrasound scan is only reimbursed on medical grounds and otherwise costs 50 euros.
During the vitality scan, we examine:
Unlike the term ultrasound, a vitality ultrasound is too early to accurately determine the due date. Sometimes waiting for the term ultrasound seems to take a very long time, and this early ultrasound offers the possibility of a little more clarity after a positive pregnancy test.
The vitality scan is usually performed internally, as the image is still too unclear when performed through the abdomen. Would you prefer not to have an internal scan? In that case, a scan before 10 weeks is too early and we recommend that you wait until the term scan.
The term ultrasound is preferably performed around 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. This ultrasound is covered by insurance.
We are looking at:
From 10 weeks onwards, this ultrasound can be performed via the abdomen. We will ask you to come with a full bladder. This can help to produce better ultrasound images.
The 13-week scan (or First Trimester Structural Ultrasound Examination/FTSUE) can be performed between 12+3 and 14+3 weeks of pregnancy.
There is no charge for the 13-week scan.
It is a medical examination to check for physical abnormalities in your baby. The 13-week scan is very similar to the 20-week scan. The purpose of the 13-week scan is to detect any abnormalities early in the pregnancy. identify more significant physical abnormalities in the child.
Detailed information about the 13-week scan can be found in the national brochure from the RIVM. Or view the animated video with an explanation of the 13-week and 20-week ultrasounds.
In the Netherlands, you can only opt for the 13-week ultrasound if you participate in the scientific IMITAS study. This study examines the advantages and disadvantages of the 13-week ultrasound scan.
The sonographer will tell you the results immediately after the scan. Did the sonographer see anything abnormal? You can then choose to follow-up study.
Important to know
You decide whether you want to have this ultrasound scan performed.
The 13-week scan is not a fun scan, but a medical examination. It is best to come to the scan with your partner only. No photographs or video recordings may be made during the scan.
The 20-week scan (or Second Trimester Structural Ultrasound Examination/STUSE) can take place between 18 and 21 weeks, but preferably in week 19 of the pregnancy. This is because we cannot see some abnormalities clearly before or after this period.
The 20-week ultrasound scan is covered by insurance.
The 20-week ultrasound is used to check for physical abnormalities in the unborn child. This ultrasound takes a detailed look at the development of the baby's organs. It also checks whether he or she is growing well, where the placenta is located and whether there is sufficient amniotic fluid.
Detailed information about the 20-week scan can be found in the national brochure from the RIVM. Or view the animated video with an explanation of the 13-week and 20-week ultrasounds.
The sonographer will tell you the results immediately after the scan. Did the sonographer see anything abnormal? You can then choose to follow-up study.
Abnormalities that are often clearly visible on this scan:
The 20-week ultrasound does not detect all abnormalities. Your child may still have an abnormality even if the results are normal. In overweight women, it is not always easy to see the baby clearly. This means that an ultrasound technician may also miss abnormalities.
Important to know
You decide whether you want to have this ultrasound scan performed.
The 20-week scan is not a fun scan, but a medical examination. It is best to come to the scan with your partner only. No photographs or video recordings may be made during the scan.
In addition to the above-mentioned ultrasounds, there are other medical ultrasounds that may be recommended by your midwife/ultrasound technician. We refer to these as ‘specific diagnostic ultrasounds’.
These ultrasounds are also covered.
The timing and method of the ultrasound scan varies depending on the indication.
These ultrasounds may be performed, for example, if there are concerns about the baby's growth, position, blood loss, or a low-lying placenta.
Pre-natal ultrasounds
Would you like to admire your baby some more?
A fun ultrasound scan can be done at your own request, as often as you like.
If you would like to know the sex of your baby before the 20-week scan, you can have a sex determination scan. This scan is available from 15 weeks of pregnancy and costs 55 euros.
A gender determination ultrasound is purely focused on determining the gender of the baby. But of course, we will also give your baby a general check-up. And we will take fun photos and moving images that you will receive digitally on your phone via a link.
What is your baby doing in your tummy? With a 2D ultrasound, you can see moving images of your baby in black and white. We take lots of photos, which are sent to you digitally, and the best ones are printed.
You can have this ultrasound scan done throughout your pregnancy. The best images are obtained up to 36 weeks, after which the baby has usually descended into the pelvis.
A 2D ultrasound costs 55 euros.
This comprehensive ultrasound scan provides a combination of 2D, 3D, and 4D images. You can have a 3/4D ultrasound scan between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy; the best images are usually obtained between 26 and 28 weeks.
Thanks to advanced techniques, you can see in detail what your little one's face looks like, for example. We share all images digitally via a link to your phone.
The cost of this ultrasound scan is 90 euros.
The coil must be positioned correctly in order to work optimally. If you have had a coil fitted by us, we offer a check-up at the practice after six weeks. During this check-up, we use a duckbill speculum to check whether the threads are visible and at the correct length. If this is the case, we can assume that the coil is in the correct position in your uterus.
If we cannot see them, we will use an ultrasound scan to locate the coil in your uterus. If you prefer an ultrasound scan to an internal examination, this is also possible. However, this ultrasound scan is not usually covered by your insurance and costs 20 euros.
What could be more enjoyable than surprising expectant parents with an additional opportunity to admire their baby?
We offer ultrasound gift vouchers especially for this purpose, which you can customise entirely to your own preferences. Ask us about the options; we are happy to help you decide!

I myself wanted to give birth at home, two wonderful experiences. I wish every woman could have this. My personal goal is autonomy, self-determination, self-confidence and freedom of choice for pregnant women. I am convinced of the power of women, not only physically but also mentally.
